| Sumario: | Alberto Fuguet and Edmundo Paz Soldán’s compilation of short stories Se habla español. Voces Latinas en USA (Alfaguara, 2000) brings together Spanish speaking authors who have a close relationship with the United States. The short story "Más estrellas que en el cielo," by Fuguet, generates a counterpoint between literary and cinematic elements. That is, it combines narrative resources with those of a script: for example, focalization and the presence of a narrator with the use of different types of shot and montage, among others. The tension between both discourses allows us to trace the story of two characters that struggle with a choice: whether to return to Chile or not. Along the way, the promises of “the land of opportunities”, as the legend about the United State goes, gradually fades. Focusing on the issues raised by the author, this article analyzes the multimodal language used in the story, that is, the articulation of a narrative text that became a script. |
