Sumario:After analyzing the state of the art, this paper concludes that there is no agreement among authors about the kind of cause that ya que introduces, since sorne authors relate this connector to real cause while others do so to logical cause. This results, implicitly or explicitly, in a lack of agreement regarding the degree of coherence that can be assígned to the clauses, the syntactic relationships which they recognize, the word class the connector belongs to and the relevant factors for its description. This study, within a cognitiva approach framework. and with the assumption of the sign's extemal motivation and the existence of the gradation of coherence in the period evaluates factors of greater or lesser strain between the clauses (acceptance of inverted cause, postposition - which disrupts the iconic correlation of clause order with the order of the events- and the presence/absence of juncture preceding the connector). Thus, we provide evidence to the proposals put forward in Stempel's analysis of parce que (2004). Also anatyzed are the information of the clause with the connector, person in the subject and verb tense and mood. In answer to the chosen approach, a corpus of newspaper ameles from Buenos Aires is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results obtained show, when compared to Borzi's (2008) results, two clearty distinct contexts of use of ya que, each one, instanciating different semantic values of the connector.
