Sumario:Society and politics have generally been considered antagonistic and even opposed objects of study. The Luhmann's theory of systems rules out this argumentative line typical of the nineteenth century sociological tradition by redefining both concepts. Its interdisciplinary approach, in this sense, characterizes "society" as a complex system organized in an a-centric fashion, i.e. starting from an array of autonomous but intercommunicated systems which have the same hierarchical level and do not depend on a central organ in charge of directing them. This has meant a huge break with Marx, Weber and Durkheim's theories, in which the political system is the social centre.
