Sumario: | "Caricaturas contemporáneas" was the name of a section included, between 1900 and 1913, in the famous illustrated magazine Caras y Caretas. It was composed by a full
page color caricature, most of them drawn by José María Cao, and a short rime. The
series was centered on notorious characters known for their public action as politicians, army men, scientists, writers and actors. Among this cast, Argentinian and foreign visual
artists active in the country were a common presence. This article proposes a visual
analysis of the various painters and sculptors that appeared in "Caricaturas contempo-
ráneas".

the curiosity of the general public. We examine how these images established multiple
identities –of class, gender and nationality– in dialogue with the different artistic models |
