Sumario: | This article offers reflections on the current Mapuche–Huilliche settlement in Guadalafquén, where the city of Valdivia was founded in the summer of 1552. An assessment of ethnographic information, documentary testimonies, and archaeological evidence indicates that the urban core was built on an indigenous settlement with two adjacent sectors: one residential and one for political gatherings, over which the main plaza and surfacing were placed. This spatial configuration, in association with the topographic, demographic, and hydrologic conditions of the area, determined a type of urbanism anchored in pre-existing human, material, and geopolitical basis. New issues in recent public debates are dealing with certain cultural attributes of this type of settlement within and under the modern city, which should contribute to a recognition of the territorial rights of indigenous populations. |
