Sumario: | The aim of this paper is to understand the use-contexts of vessels recovered in residential spaces in the central-western sector of the Santa María valley (Catamarca–Tucumán) during the first and second millennium A.D. (about 1–1500 A.D.). The paper considers the quantity, function, visual representations, and size of the vessels, as well as architectural and contextual evidence, from the archaeological sites Morro del Fraile, El Carmen 1, and El Carmen 2. The presence of large pots and jars next to large hearths in semi-open spaces, which is the case at the Morro del Fraile rock shelter and El Carmen 1 enclosure 1-2, could suggest these were contexts for preparing food and/or drink for more people than those who resided there on a daily basis. This possibility is supported by the large number of serving vessels identified in Morro del Fraile enclosure 1 and in El Carmen 2 enclosure 2 and the predominance of serving vessels with visual representations in all of these contexts. The presence of serving vessels, mostly without visual representations, in a roofed enclosure with a small hearth, as in El Carmen 1 enclosure 13, or next to a large pot, as in El Carmen 1 enclosure 11, suggests these spaces were either for daily domestic consumption or processing food and/or drink to be consumed in an extra-domestic communal context. |
