Sumario:The aim of this article is to approach the history of the first years of existence and operation of the Hospital del Señor del Milagro in the city of Salta (1848-1864) in order to analyze the characteristics of this institution at that time, the agents involved in it and their practices and representations related to the care of the sick. The study of these variables will allow us to approach some of the particularities of the secularization process in Salta and the relationships between civil and ecclesiastical power in the configuration of a social assistance institution in the mid-nineteenth century. We argue that religious principles and agents continued to play a key role in the shaping of the provincial state of Salta and that they were able to articulate with the modernization projects that were imposed on some nineteenth-century institutions.
