Its reason lies in the analysis of some measures adopted by the emperor regarding these peoples, decisions that continued with the process of gradual assimilation of the barbarians already begun in the years preceding Theodosius.At first, the fourth century opened the way for Christians previously persecuted to be progressively assimilated by the Empire, thanks to the work of Constantine and Theodosius. On the other hand, this century was also characterized by the increasing penetration of the barbarian peoples outside the Roman limes into the Empire. El presente trabajo es una primera aproximación al estudio de las políticas diplomáticas entre el emperador romano Teodosio ‘el Grande’ y los bárbaros visigodos. Su razón de ser estriba en el análisis de algunas medidas que adoptó el mandatario con respecto a estos pueblos, decisiones que continuaron con el proceso de asimilación paulatina de los bárbaros ya comenzado en los años precedentes a Teodosio.Por un lado, el siglo IV abrió el camino a los cristianos anteriormente perseguidos a que fueran asimilados progresivamente por el Imperio, gracias a la obra de Constantino y de Teodosio. Por otra parte, este siglo también estuvo caracterizado por la creciente penetración de los pueblos bárbaros de las afueras del limes romano hacia adentro del Imperio.
