Sumario:In the last 30 years, a very important agricultural expansion occurred in the Chaco region that transformed more than 6 million hectares of native forests, a process that happened with little or no state planning and control. By the end of 2007, the national law 26,331 was enacted, which disrupted the new clearings until the provinces elaborate the local land planning law for their forests. This study evaluated whether the native forest conservation policy is appropriate to ensure its preservation. The review and analysis of the national law 26,331 and of the different provincial laws of Chaco, Formosa, Salta and Santiago del Estero, their associated decrees and resolutions were carried out. When considering the area of forest that each province assigned to the conservation categories and the activities that are allowed in them, it was possible to estimate that more than 8 million hectares of forests that have been assigned to a category that does not allow their transformation, in practice are not protected.
