| Sumario: | This paper studies the presence of forms of address in the linguistic landscape of Mendoza City (Argentina) in a corpus of signs gathered between 2015 and 2017. This visible linguistic landscape is analyzed in contrast with the history of address forms in the area as well as in comparison with what occurs in face-to-face interactions. The analysis confirms that the use of vos is widespread, as opposed to a less frequent use of usted and some isolated occurrences of tú. This visibility and prominence of vos –rather than tú– accounts for a shift in the community towards an acceptance of its own variety which thus confirms the convergence between the prescriptive and the descriptive norms. However, at the same time, there is data that suggests that this extension of vos –now instead of usted– in the linguistic landscape is not yet paralleled in actual interpersonal exchanges, i.e., in the invisible landscape. |
