In the Mendoza River’s basin there are several studies that analyze the inequalities between irrigated and non-irrigated lands, however, it has not been investigated in depth in urban areas. For this reason, this article is focus on the strategies for access to water for domestic and residential use in the urban area, from the perspective of Urban Political Ecology. For this purpose, this study aims to analyze three different types of urbanization (gated communities, social housing and slums) and the urban water management. This will be analyzed by carrying out a documentary analysis of regulations, plans and newspaper articles about the urbanization, as well as statistical information and interviews. It has been found that the State acts as a facilitator of the advance of real estate developments and that scarcity does not affect all inhabitants equally. On the one hand some gated communities have problems of water excess and on the other hand the slums do not have access to water in sufficient quantity and quality. La urbanización en zonas áridas como el Área Metropolitana de Mendoza implica desigualdades en el acceso al agua. En la cuenca del río Mendoza existen numerosos trabajos que analizan las desigualdades entre las tierras irrigadas y las no irrigadas, sin embargo, no se han investigado en profundidad en áreas urbanas. Por lo tanto, este artículo se centra en las estrategias de acceso al agua para uso doméstico y residencial en el área urbana, desde el enfoque de la Ecología Política Urbana. Para ello se analizan tres tipos diferentes de urbanización (urbanizaciones cerradas, urbanizaciones estatales, y las villas y asentamientos) y la gestión estatal del agua. Se realiza un análisis documental de la normativa, regulación, planes y notas periodísticas sobre fraccionamientos y urbanización, así como de información estadística y entrevistas. Encontramos que el Estado actúa como facilitador del avance de desarrollos inmobiliarios y que la escasez no afecta a todos los habitantes por igual, sino que, mientras que en emprendimientos privados con derecho a riego presentan problemas de exceso de agua, en villas y asentamientos no acceden al agua en cantidad y calidad suficientes.
