Sumario: | Objetive: Evaluate microbiological composition and clinical
features of periodontal pockets at initial phase, after initial
therapy, and during third and sixth month, in response to
surgical and non surgical periodontal treatment.
Materials and Techniques: Patients with chronic periodontitis
diagnosis were split in two groups: treated with mechanical
therapy alone, and those who besides mechanical therapy
underwent on surgical intervention. Clinical records were
taken (Bacterial plaque, bleeding probing, pocket depth,
clinical attachment level and recession). Subgingival biofilm
samples were obtained from 22 sites in 4 differents phases.
Polymerase chain reaction technique identified putative
periopathogens (Porphyromona gingivalis, Treponema
denticola, Tanerella forsythia). Patients were reassessed at
thirth and sixth month after treatment.
Results: improvement in clinical features and percentage
of infected sites were found after initial therapy, especially
during maintenance months. T denticola was prevalent
specie (59%) and bacterial asociation between T. denticola and P. gingivalis were found in 14% of samples.
Conclutions: both treatments significantly improved clinical
features and reduce infected periodontal pockets. However
the clinical advantage of surgery , wasn´t conclusive in
periodontal lessions without bone regeneration. Obtained
benefits appeared mostly in maintenance therapy. |
