In particular, in his letters Ruben Dario discuses with Unamuno defending the Francophone tradition and the centrality of Paris he occupied the Americanists letters, was the sad result of neglect and lack of editors and Spanish cultural press, mainly residents of Madrid, by the news of the Latin American literature. However, Dario will not fail to see Unamuno as one of the greatest references of Spanish-speaking letters, and name it "spiritual leader" of his generation. In this direction the Spanish writer, now in its critical function, try to redirect their younger partners to Spanish letters within the Latin American tradition, exploring its continental constituent bases, which could not deny the metropolitan sources of the Latin American tradition.
Hacia 1900 una vasta colonia de escritores americanos residentes en París, seducidos por la gran metrópoli, y atraídos porque veían en ella una posibilidad de vivir de las letras, cruzaban cartas –algunas de ellas encendidas- con el escritor español quien profesaba una profundo rechazo por los productos del simbolismo francés en cuya tradición más reciente –y hasta imitación- el modernismo americano se había posicionado. El centro de esta controversia de Unamuno con los latinoamericanos era su elección de Francia como su fuente intelectual. Su galofobia lo hizo combatir los galicismos misguardises presentes en las letras del castellano americano, y se declarará profundamente misógalo, en contra de todo lo francés. Su rechazo a lo francés, a quienes juzgaba admirablemente dotados para la ciencia pero no para el arte, nacía de la afectación que veía en los últimas producciones estéticas. En las cartas escritas entre 1900 y 1904 que fue cruzando con intelectuales americanos, Unamuno no dejará de insistir en la necesidad de abandonar la seducción por todo lo francés y explorar las fuentes genuinas de la tradición latino y americana. En sus cartas Rubén Darío saldrá al cruce de Unamuno defendiendo la tradición francófona y el lugar central que París ocupaba las letras americanistas, era el triste resultado del abandono y desinterés de editores y prensa cultural española, principalmente residentes en Madrid, por las novedades de la literatura hispanoamericana. Sin embargo, Darío no dejará de ver a Unamuno como una de los mayores referentes de las letras hispanohablantes, y de nombrarlo “espíritu director“ de su generación. En esa dirección el escritor español, ahora en su función de crítico, intentará reconducir a sus interlocutores más jóvenes hacia las letras castellanas dentro de la tradición latinoamericana, explorando sus bases constitutivas continentales, en las que no podían negar las fuentes metropolitanas.
