| Sumario: | Historians haven’t reached full agreement on the issue of the specific mix-
ture and tense relations between conservative and modern tendencies in
National Socialism. This essay examines critically a number of theses about
this controversial matter, when it refers to the ideology and practice of
German National Socialism in general (Herf 1984, Zitelman 1987, Mommsen
1990, Nolte 1993, Payne 1995, Roseman 1996, Kershaw and Lewin 1997,
Griffin 1998) and when it deals specifically with the Shoa (Lübbe 1992,
Beyerchen 1997, Lindenfeld 1997 and Almog 2001). The diverse positions
Estudios Sociales Contemporaneos have made interesting contributions, but at the same time there are evident
difficulties, arising from the not very precise use of key concepts, like “mo-
dernity” and “rationality”. This essay makes some suggestions for a greater
interaction between the task of building theoretical-analytic frames and the
gathering of historic documentation.
