Sumario:In the present paper we describe the influence of the addition of autolyzed yeast to Fowell`s medium on the sporulation of different strains of the genus Saccharomyces. The data show in most of the cases an increase in the proportion of acsi, in relation to the result obtained with Fowell`s medium. However, there are some differences in the behavior of the various strains tested, a fact which points to differences in the requirements of these strains for maximum sporulation. In one of the experiments, the density of cells on Fowell`s agar has been varied between wide limits, and in the cases where a large inoculum was employed, there was an increase in the number of asci. The results were in general similar to those obtained by adding autolyzed yeast to Fowell`s medium on which a light inoculum had been transferred. The similarity between the result obtained by transferring a heavy inoculum on Fowell`s medium, and the use of a light inoculum on Fowell`s medium to which autolyzed yeast had been added, points to the fact that the increase in cell concentration may cause the incorporation to the medium of certain substances essential for maximum sporulation. From the practical point of view, the use of heavy inocula on Fowell`s agar can be recommended in order to obtain maximum sporulation.
