Sumario: | Although the stories of Gregory of Tours don’t expand too much about slavery, its
mentions to them show that the slaves had several functions within the Gallic
society. The continuous wars provided prisoners capable of being enslaved. But
there was no market that would allow recovering the investment of purchasing
them. The crowd of prisoners didn’t fall automatically in trafficking. The rescue of
prisoners by bishops shows that its market value as slaves was relatively low in a
context of trade recession. Changing borders and vacant land made the control of
the workers much more difficult than in the imperial era. The slaves participated
of this improvement. Wars were not produced in remote areas but in zones close
enough so that the networks of solidarity from their territories of origin reached
them. Knowledge of the social codes, language and customs of their masters, conspired against the property condition that the law assigned to them. Sharing
the same religion and the permeability of franc group membership tempered
further the oppression to which they were subjected. |
