The continuous wars provided prisoners capable of being enslaved. But there was no market that would allow recovering the investment of purchasing them. The crowd of prisoners didn’t fall automatically in trafficking. The rescue of prisoners by bishops shows that its market value as slaves was relatively low in a context of trade recession. Changing borders and vacant land made the control of the workers much more difficult than in the imperial era. The slaves participated of this improvement. Wars were not produced in remote areas but in zones close enough so that the networks of solidarity from their territories of origin reached them.
