Descripción
Sumario:Ed King (2011) by David Guterson is a retelling of the tragedy Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. In it, the presence, both latent and patent, of a mythic fabric embedded in the main characters is identified. The author’s zeitgeist reveals itself as a set of referential elements making the retelling a new version of the sophoclean work. The universal and everlasting character of the mythic is taken here as an element that judges the referential content in a sort of dialogue with the past. The retelling offers two implications. The first is pedagogical and highlights the value of the novel as a method or means to overcome a controversial notion of canon, allowing an encounter with the classics in moments in which the opening of the canon has brought about a displacement of the works thus classified. The second is a social implication: the novel brings to light the dilemma of those who, as Oedipus, look for their real origins but are prevented from doing it due to the secrecy behind the assisted reproductive technologies.
