Sumario:Considering that the provinces of Rio de la Plata were not such... but that they were independent States, makes one wonder why they kept the denomination of provinces. In effect, the mistaken denomination of provinces is one of the main sources of confusion in the study of the initial forms of State in the Río de la Plata. Starting from this statement formulated by Chiaramonte (1995: 165), this work tries to find the meaning of that denomination, resorting to the legal tradition and the conditions that transformed the concept of province during the formative stage of Rio de la Plata federalism. In addition, analyzing the first provincial constitutions, we tried to reflect on the statehood assigned to the provinces in this period showing the fundamental role assumed by the concept of province in this context.
