In effect, the mistaken denomination of provinces is one of the main sources of confusion in the study of the initial forms of State in the Río de la Plata. Starting from this statement formulated by Chiaramonte (1995: 165), this work tries to find the meaning of that denomination, resorting to the legal tradition and the conditions that transformed the concept of province during the formative stage of Rio de la Plata federalism. In addition, analyzing the first provincial constitutions, we tried to reflect on the statehood assigned to the provinces in this period showing the fundamental role assumed by the concept of province in this context. Considerar que las provincias rioplatenses no eran tales"¦ sino que eran Estados independientes, obliga a preguntarse por qué conservaban la denominación de provincias. En efecto, la equívoca denominación de provincias es una de las principales fuentes de confusión en el estudio de las formas iniciales de Estado en el Río de la Plata. Tomando como punto de partida de este planteamiento formulado por Chiaramonte (1995: 165), este trabajo procura encontrar el sentido de aquella denominación, recurriendo para ello a la tradición jurídica y a las condiciones que transformaron el concepto de provincia durante la etapa formativa del federalismo rioplatense. Analizando, además, las primeras constituciones provinciales, intentamos reflexionar entorno a la estadidad adjudicada a las provincias en este período y mostrar el papel fundamental que asumió el concepto de provincia en dicho contexto.
