Both studies analysed where the nuclear accent is placed in university students’ oral production, both in Spanish (L1) and English (L2). The participants were students of the English Translator and English Teacher Training Courses. As regards the first stage of the research, the subjects of study were elementary students of the target language (L2), whereas in the second phase, the participants were advanced students of English. The corpus was obtained from the students’ reading of a story in English as well as from the reading of its translation into Spanish. Different cases of deaccented and/or reaccented material of given information in final position in the intonational phrase have been examined as a phenomenon connecting phonology and pragmatics. The results suggest that the theoretical and practical instruction of the accentual patterns of the target language affects the students’ choice of nuclear accent when reading aloud, both in Spanish (L1) and English (L2). El presente artículo expone los resultados obtenidos a partir de la comparación de dos trabajos llevados a cabo en la Facultad de Lenguas (FADEL), Universidad Nacional del Comahue (UNCo). En ambos estudios se analizó la ubicación del acento nuclear en la producción oral de estudiantes del Profesorado y el Traductorado de Inglés de la mencionada facultad tanto en español (L1) como en inglés (L2). Los sujetos del primer estudio tenían un nivel elemental de la lengua meta, mientras que los participantes del segundo trabajo de investigación poseían un nivel avanzado. El corpus analizado se obtuvo a partir de la lectura de un cuento en inglés y de su correspondiente versión en español por parte de los sujetos de ambos estudios. Se examinaron los casos de desacentuación y reacentuación de información dada en posición final en la frase entonativa como un fenómeno de interfaz entre la fonología y la pragmática. Los resultados aportan evidencia a favor de la incidencia que la instrucción teórica y práctica de los patrones acentuales de la lengua objeto ejerce sobre las decisiones respecto al emplazamiento del acento nuclear por parte de los estudiantes en ambas lenguas (L1 y L2) en la lectura en voz alta.
