Sumario:This paper traces the creation of state capabilities to produce official statistics in Mendoza, and its relationship to public requirements following the Great Depression. This study addresses the work of the Technical Institute for Research and Economic Orientation of Production (1938-1945), and an emblematic, controversial and barely remembered fact in local history: a general census of population and wealth by this agency. This research is of a qualitative character. Its development required placing in dialogue concepts from the social studies of science and technology with contributions from political science and historical studies. The main findings identify the experience of local knowledge creation that aimed to solve specific challenges in Mendoza’s industrialization process, and confirm that the construction of certain state capacities reached an important developmental threshold during the time period studied.
